Cake news and fun

Good Monday afternoon or evening fellow cake-lovers!   Our little newsflash today covers your new photo gallery, a heads up on the tres leches cake challenge, some musical Monday fruitcake songs and a closeup of treasure!

First in the news, I’ve set up a photo gallery in my widget sidebar of ‘Lovely stuff you guys made from the blog‘.  At the moment there’s a fruitcake-cake anglais by Dookes and brioche rolls by Annette.  Please help yourselves to some for a little Monday energy – they won’t mind! 🙂

Cake Anglais-fruitcake

A beautiful orange and rum fruitcake-cake anglais fruitcake made by Dookes! Looks moist and delicious!

Easy brioche rolls

Lovely easy brioche rolls made by Annette! Look how they’ve been torn to keep the yummy fluffy texture!

So if you make anything from the blog (I know some people are preparing to tackle macarons) then it would be great if you could take a photo and send it to me at liliscakes@liliscakes.com or post it on Lili’s cakes facebook page (is there loss of photo quality via facebook?).  It would be nice for you to all share stuff we can see, and no need for perfection!

Oh and please also give me feedback with your photo, positive or negative, on how the recipe went for you and the final product!  I’ll include your comments in the photo’s description so people can pick up tips and know what to expect.  For example, Annette reported you need a little extra water if using all caster sugar for the brioche rolls (but if you include a little invert sugar or honey then the quantities should be fine).

Tres leches cake

Testing a tres leches cake from the local Mexican restaurant!

More exciting news!  There’ll be a tres leches cake challenge up on the blog soon.  You’ll have the whole of April to make one and produce a post or send a photo and comments! 🙂  I’ve never made a tres leches (three milks) cake but at the weekend I ate my first two ever and it’s all true:  it’s an absolutely delicious and heavenly cake!!! 🙂  Seriously thinking of going back to one of the restaurants and begging for their recipe. More news coming soon!

And providing our musical Monday interlude are Eraserhead with the first of our fruitcake songs!  It would be more appropriate nearer Christmas but never mind!

… and here are the Superions (a ‘side project’ by Fred Schneider of the B-52’s):

You can vote for your favourite song if you like or leave a comment below!

Finally, for my photo101 coursework (zooming in!) here’s a close-up of my breakfast verrine (trifle in a glass!) thrown together but sparkling like a treasure trove of delicious layers topped with wondrous edible jewels!!!  Hee hee..

Couldn’t resist throwing in some macarons – lots of zooming going on again!

Have a lovely week!  Happy baking, clicking, blogging, reading and eating!!!   And may you always have a piece of fruitcake or other kind of cake handy when you need it!!  Because as Eraserhead says in their song, life is a piece of cake! 🙂

Making cakes with my French mother on Sundays was an important part of my childhood. As an adult I then experimented with baking books and internet recipes and did a great patisserie course in Le Cordon Bleu Paris. I'm still trying out new recipes and creating some of my own cakes with influences from all around the world, adding some healthy ones to the repertoire. Yes, I love cakes!!! :)

    • Thank you Fimnora! Happy you like the look of the verrine and yes, good for anytime and super easy to make with fruit and leftover creams or mashed up stuff – like broken macarons! 🙂
