Cake news and fun

Had a fun week making stuff.  During the last few days of my UK visit I enlisted mum’s help in the kitchen and we managed to make our first ever Rose and Lime Turkish delights for the Daring Kitchen challenge and some very exciting Pistachio and cherry soufflés that rose to great lopsided heights!  I’m tweaking them to come out greener and less like Leaning Towers of Pisa.  The recipes will be with you soon, both experiments having surprised me by not failing utterly!  Much to the relief of poor ole’ mum who was still up at midnight helping.  Next week maybe I’ll try making a simple savoury cheese soufflé.  Come and join me in the world of soufflés that don’t collapse!  Touch wood.  But very gently!  🙂

It’s sunk a little, hasn’t it?!  Quick, must stop taking photos and eat it!  🙂

Back home in Barcelona I’ve tried getting into a ‘lighter eating’ mode (yes, lighter than a soufflé) and made a healthier star anise strawberry and pistachio tart with spelt flour, almond milk and xylitol instead of sugar.  Having partaken of a few slices for research purposes, I’m now thinking ‘Wow!  This is great, no sugar high and feeling good!’  Might have a tiny little bit more…

So my little trip to the UK and family cake bonanza are over.  Snif!  I’ll just show you some photos of the flowers in mum’s allotment.

FlowersIt was a nice change from the kitchen and I helped with the weeding.  And sitting in the sun.  Both activities being highly therapeutic.

Making cakes with my French mother on Sundays was an important part of my childhood. As an adult I then experimented with baking books and internet recipes and did a great patisserie course in Le Cordon Bleu Paris. I'm still trying out new recipes and creating some of my own cakes with influences from all around the world, adding some healthy ones to the repertoire. Yes, I love cakes!!! :)
