A fairytale – the cake dream

This blog is about sharing a passion for baking, eating or just looking at cakes!

And it’s also about living the cake dream.

Because once upon a time there was a little girl who made cake-shaped cushions, little painted clay cakes, cake appliqué t-shirts and real cakes with her mum.

DSCF8391The little girl’s dream was to have her own cake shop, but people told her that if she did she would gobble up all the cakes.  Oh dear, she thought.  Then she journeyed to a patisserie in the great land of cakes called France and asked if she could become their apprentice.  But they told her she would have to stay a long, long time, receive very, very little money and work very, very hard.

She decided sadly to return to her own land and do her school exams.

Many, many years passed by.  The girl never stopped making cakes and grew into a woman with the heart of the child who still loved them.  She made crochet cupcakes and macarons and collected cake realia.

She also made mountains and mountains of real cakes which she shared with the people around her.  She made friends with people like herself who would only talk about cakes.

10462798_10152504335422509_3385070770812594422_n (2)Then miraculously she was able to go to a wonderful patisserie course in the great city of cakes, Paris, at le Cordon Bleu, a school where you could learn patisserie magic. There she was trained long and hard in the magic skills of basic patisserie and learnt to say ‘oui chef’, not cut her fingers and bake as fast and as well as she could so the chefs would be happy with her cakes.

There was still so much to learn but she could not stay.  She would return, she promised them with tears in her eyes.

Back in her own land, the woman made even more complicated cakes, sometimes labouring for days to recreate the layers of confection borne of her imagination.  At times she became weary of the layers and made lovely simple cakes, with healthy and nourishing ingredients.

Often when she felt a little tired she read her patisserie books, which never stopped growing in number and made her shelves creak under their incredible weight.

Then one day this cake-loving woman came upon a new land in the clouds, where you could not touch the other people but everyone shared the ideas and pictures in their heads.  This is the land of Blog, she was told.

So she began writing in the cloud, for a small group of followers to see, speckled about the world and sharing her obsession with …. cakes!  In turn, she read the other cloud lovers’ fascinating tales about many things in life.  But most of all she felt the warmth of a new group of people like herself, sharing and living the cake dream.

The cake adventure continues …

To find out more you can also read Why make cakes and blog about it? which is unfortunately less like a fairy tale but there is a nice photo of a cake.

  3. Hi Lili,

You know I love your cakes and just love it. You are an awesome cook and I always feel loved to eat your virtual cakes which you share with me.Now, I’m sharing this beautiful award with you. I (and probably the rest of your readers) would love to know more about how you write your magic verses. I was recently nominated for a special kind of award called, ‘Virtual Blog Tour’ that lets one share more than just list blogs we like and I would like pass on a nomination to you (link to my post https://feelingsoulmate.wordpress.com/2015/03/09/blog-tour-award)
Here are the rules if you’d like to accept:
    1. Pass the tour on to up to four other bloggers. Give them the rules and a specific Monday to post.
    2. Answer four questions about your creative process which lets other bloggers and visitors know what inspires you to do what you do:
•What am I working on at the moment?
•How does my work differ to others in my genre?
    •Why do I write/create what I do?
•How does my writing/creative process work?
    3. Compose a one-time post which is posted on a specific Monday (date given from your nominator).
The date I would like you to post on – 30 March
And also, please don’t feel obliged to do anything. The matter is that I am a big fan and would love to know more about your creative process.

    Keep Shinning always,
    Nimmi.

    • Hi Nimmi! Thank you for the lovely award! Sorry it took me a while to answer, as I’ve been busy and also thinking about what to do… because I was nominated for another 2 awards and haven’t had time to do anything about them. So what to do?! 🙂

I like the look of your award Nimmi, and I am honoured. It is always lovely to be appreciated and it’s always great when you visit me or I visit your beautiful blog. I’m going away for 4 days to the rock and going to think about it, but I’ll very probably say yes!!! 🙂 Would it be okay if I made it an award post on March 30 and included a mention to the other awards too, in the same post?

      • Hey Lili,
First of all many congratulations for your other awards.
And I truly understand your situation, the awards makes us feel good, however, a time consuming task 😛 But, I know you will do it.
And you can post it on March 30 which is the day I have given to you and you can include other awards too with that no worries.
But before all this.. Enjoy your trip and come back with more of your yummy recipes which I will miss the most 😉
        Love to you ❤ 🙂

    • Thank you Sarah! I’m very honoured and happy to receive a ‘creative’ award! I have a slight award backlog so do you mind if I ‘reply’ to yours on a general award post on Monday March 30th? I’m lumping awards together a bit so I have more time in the kitchen! And congratulations on your award and lovely blog!!! 🙂

  5. Hi lili, I follow your blog, I love the look of your cakes… If I had the choice I would live on cakes. You guessed I have a sweet tooth. However I am a tad over weight and I am in a eat healthy mode. So looking for healthier eating cakes. Haha! Any suggestions welcome!💚💛👒💜💙

    • Hi Roz! Thank you and so happy you like the cakes! 🙂 Yes, I’ve had to stop living on cakes for health reasons and can tell you how I cope if you like!

I make healthier sugar free cakes and eat smaller slices over a few days or longer, and give some to friends and family. Spelt fruitcake and healthy lime cake are great. And if I have a decadent cake with lots of cream or mousse in it, I split it into portions to freeze (macarons freeze quite well too) and try to eat them little by little within 2 weeks or so. I had very high cholesterol but found it did go down without giving up cakes completely but with a balanced diet with miso soup, veg, fruit, etc. and exercise cycling, climbing and walking.

Everyone is different, so you’d have to see what works for you but some spelt or flourless and sugar-free cakes are delicious! Let me know if you try making some what you think… ! Hope you’re planning your next healthy cake-eating session now! 🙂 xxx
