A fairytale – the cake dream

This blog is about sharing a passion for baking, eating or just looking at cakes!

And it’s also about living the cake dream.

Because once upon a time there was a little girl who made cake-shaped cushions, little painted clay cakes, cake appliqué t-shirts and real cakes with her mum.

DSCF8391The little girl’s dream was to have her own cake shop, but people told her that if she did she would gobble up all the cakes.  Oh dear, she thought.  Then she journeyed to a patisserie in the great land of cakes called France and asked if she could become their apprentice.  But they told her she would have to stay a long, long time, receive very, very little money and work very, very hard.

She decided sadly to return to her own land and do her school exams.

Many, many years passed by.  The girl never stopped making cakes and grew into a woman with the heart of the child who still loved them.  She made crochet cupcakes and macarons and collected cake realia.

She also made mountains and mountains of real cakes which she shared with the people around her.  She made friends with people like herself who would only talk about cakes.

10462798_10152504335422509_3385070770812594422_n (2)Then miraculously she was able to go to a wonderful patisserie course in the great city of cakes, Paris, at le Cordon Bleu, a school where you could learn patisserie magic. There she was trained long and hard in the magic skills of basic patisserie and learnt to say ‘oui chef’, not cut her fingers and bake as fast and as well as she could so the chefs would be happy with her cakes.

There was still so much to learn but she could not stay.  She would return, she promised them with tears in her eyes.

Back in her own land, the woman made even more complicated cakes, sometimes labouring for days to recreate the layers of confection borne of her imagination.  At times she became weary of the layers and made lovely simple cakes, with healthy and nourishing ingredients.

Often when she felt a little tired she read her patisserie books, which never stopped growing in number and made her shelves creak under their incredible weight.

Then one day this cake-loving woman came upon a new land in the clouds, where you could not touch the other people but everyone shared the ideas and pictures in their heads.  This is the land of Blog, she was told.

So she began writing in the cloud, for a small group of followers to see, speckled about the world and sharing her obsession with …. cakes!  In turn, she read the other cloud lovers’ fascinating tales about many things in life.  But most of all she felt the warmth of a new group of people like herself, sharing and living the cake dream.

The cake adventure continues …

To find out more you can also read Why make cakes and blog about it? which is unfortunately less like a fairy tale but there is a nice photo of a cake.

I wish I could “live the cake dream,” but I think somehow you were meant for this role. I shall just have to observe you eating your cake and open my mouth to eat a piece as well. Virtually, yummy!

Hi Lili… Great bio so far, this is my fav part ‘The cake adventure continues …’ I do a bit of baking myself, whenever inspiration comes, so I will check out your blog too 🙂 There’s nothing better than good italian coffee and a piece of fresh cream fruit cake, at least in my house and during painting workshop 🙂 Cheers from Ireland, Swav.
