Special everyday cakes and treats

Just as the cake-loving woman thought she could relax and contemplate the sky, she suddenly remembered she had a Fiesta Friday party to attend in those clouds up there. ‘Brilliant, a party!’  Oops… she’d promised to bring a pretty cake!  ‘Noooo, not more writing out recipes!’ she moaned, holding her head in her hands, then suddenly realised ‘Drawings!  I’ll draw it all!’  So here you are:  pictures and photos of events leading up to the scrumptious multilayered blood orange tart.  And a few words, but not too many:  Tangy, fresh, almondy, creamy, fruity delight.  Yay!  She did a little dance.

Blood orange tart

A tart is born.

S0873263Hey, what are blood oranges?

Back home, she took a quick gander at Hugo and Victor’s seasonal baking book then buttered the tart ring.

S0863261 This was the plan.  Aah, but would it go according to plan?

S0843257She rolled up her sleeves and soaked the gelatine

S0054006… then checked her notes for shortcrust pastry to make her spelt pastry case.

S0933274

S0063011She glanced at her useful tips for lining a pastry case and baking blind

S0083014but this time left her tart case in the oven for an extra 10 minutes or more, so it was really, really baked and even a bit dark brown at the bottom.

Next came the bottom layer of almond cream.

S0763242S0793248She waited till it had cooled then spread a thin, even layer of marmalade over the almond cream.  Marmalade, yum!  Next time she’d make her own …

Going from left to right – layer 1: almond cream; layer 2: orange marmalade; layer 3: orange blossom water bavaroise

Now for the third layer of orange blossom water bavaroise.  Please, please let it come out okay, she sang, you can get it if you really want, but you must try, try and try … (click to sing along and party, party!).

Finally, it was time for her beloved beautifully-sweet-yet-tart slices of blood orange.  The tart-loving woman peeled whole oranges, carefully removing the white bits then cut out segments, leaving the membrane behind, to make the supremes (not the pop group).  Want a supreme step-by-step?

She placed the lovely supremes on her tart and tada!

Baking on Sundays with my French mum was a lovely part of my childhood. Later I experimented with baking books or internet recipes and did the pâtisserie course at Le Cordon Bleu Paris. Still trying out new recipes and inventing cakes with influences from all around the world, including some healthier ones. Yes, love cakes!!! Hope you'll love them too and have fun baking. :)

Wow Lili! This is just fabulous. You reminded me of one of my vey good friend whom I met through Blogging. She doesn’t blog anymore. Priya!! She used to create such amazing sketches of the whole ingredients and procedure. Just awesome! You have left me speechless! Purely speechless! It’s one of a kind share. I am so glad to know you through FF! Hope you are having fun at this fiesta.

Your drawings are so much fun! (quite a bit of work too- I’m sure!) I think all tarts are naturally beautiful- and yours is no exception. The layers sound tasty and the top is lovely. 🙂 Happy Fiesta Friday!! Enjoy the party! 🙂 Josette

Thanks Josette! The drawings are quite fast to do luckily. And thanks for your lovely comments about the tart. I agree that they’re all beautiful and this turned out to be a really tasty one (I was surprised at how good it was!). I’m off to try out more food at the party!! 🙂 Happy Fiesta Friday to you too, and thanks for hosting and for the wonderful empanadas! 🙂
